Multi-Phase Digital Oscillator In A Full Test System

Our 3-phase or 6-phase digital oscillator can be more than an independent multi-phase function generator. It can be used as a core component of a test system. For example, a 3-phase digital oscillator, along with two high-current AC constant-current power amplifiers, one low-current AC constant-current power amplifier, and one high-voltage AC constant-voltage power amplifier, makes a complete test system for watt meter testing. This test system can provide a very wide range of output current and voltage. This type of test system saves space and money by eliminating the need to purchase individual single-phase digital oscillators.

We designed and delivered a custom test system (that uses our 3-phase digital function generator) to our customer, Southern California Edison (SCE) in California.

The test system includes:
  • A three-phase digital oscillator (multi-phase function generator)
  • Two high-current AC constant-current power amplifiers
  • One low-current AC constant-current power amplifier
  • One high-voltage AC constant-voltage power amplifier
The three independent oscillator phases provide independent input signals to different power amplifiers. The power amplifiers can also be used individually if needed or combined to achieve different output ranges. This configuration can achieve the following performance:

Phase 1: High-Current Testing

By putting the two high-current amplifiers in parallel and using phase one of the digital oscillator, the system can deliver up to 400 A rms. @ 6 V rms. compliance voltage.

Phase 2: Low-Current Testing

Phase two of the oscillator will input another 0–1 V rms. signal to the low-current power amplifier, allowing the system to deliver currents as low as 10 mA rms. while maintaining a relatively good signal-to-noise ratio.

Phase 3: High-Voltage Testing

The third oscillator phase will be used for the high-voltage constant-voltage amplifier, providing an output voltage of up to 480 V rms.

This configuration demonstrates how a multi-phase digital oscillator can be used as a core component for a more flexible, multi-range test system. For SCE, this multi-unit approach provided a single test system capable of watt meter testing across an exceptionally wide range of current and voltage, exceeding the capabilities of their discontinued test equipment.

About Our 3-phase and 6-phase Digital Oscillator

Our multi-phase digital oscillator can output a 0 – 1 V rms. signal per phase. The phase angle among the output channels is adjustable from 0° to 360° by either RS232 or GPIB commands. The RS232 or GPIB interface can also adjust the phase angle, output amplitude, output frequency, and output On/Off. The multi-phase oscillators are also equipped with External Synchronization and Closed-loop Feedback functions.
